The Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics – Autumn Edition 2026 once again brought together textile manufacturers, apparel brands, designers, and sourcing professionals to explore the latest developments in fabrics and materials.
Among the trends visible at this year’s exhibition, performance fabrics continued to move beyond traditional sportswear. Suppliers increasingly presented materials designed to work across urban commuting, active lifestyles, running, outdoor activities, and casual apparel.
From Sportswear to Everyday Performance
Modern consumers increasingly expect clothing to provide both comfort and function.
Breathability, moisture management, stretch, lightweight construction, odor control, and easy-care performance are becoming relevant not only to sportswear but also to T-shirts, polo shirts, commuter clothing, travel apparel, and other everyday garments.
This shift was reflected in the collections presented at Intertextile Shanghai 2026.
Guangzhou-based textile supplier Mibein, for example, presented its latest performance knitted fabrics under the theme “City to Trail, No Boundaries.” Its collection focused on connecting urban, sports, running, outdoor, and professional apparel applications through functional knit solutions.
Performance Fabrics Target Real Wearing Problems
Another noticeable direction is the industry’s growing focus on solving practical consumer problems.
Instead of promoting technical specifications alone, fabric developers are paying greater attention to how materials perform during actual wear.
Odor buildup is one example. Polyester fabrics are widely used in performance apparel, but moisture, heat, and extended wear can create comfort and odor challenges.
At the exhibition, new fabric developments addressed these issues through combinations of odor resistance, moisture management, quick drying, breathability, and improved next-to-skin comfort.
Five Application Directions
Performance knit development is also becoming more application-specific.
The collection highlighted at the show covered five main directions: fashion sportswear, streetwear and structured silhouettes, performance running, light outdoor and hiking apparel, and urban professional clothing.
Each category requires a different balance of properties. Running fabrics prioritize lightweight construction and moisture management, while outdoor materials require durability and adaptable comfort. Urban apparel, meanwhile, increasingly combines a soft hand feel with wrinkle resistance and easy care.
A Broader Future for Functional Knits
Intertextile Shanghai 2026 showed that the boundary between performance clothing and everyday fashion continues to fade.
Consumers want garments that feel comfortable on a commute, perform during activity, and still look appropriate in everyday settings. For apparel brands, this creates growing demand for fabrics that combine technical performance with texture, appearance, and commercial scalability.
As these expectations develop, functional knitted fabrics are likely to play an increasingly important role across sportswear, outdoor, travel, casual, and urban apparel markets.
